Reap The Benefits of Enterprise Mobility

Each month we get dozens of phone calls from business owners and IT managers looking to sync business email, contacts and calendars to their smartphones – from BlackBerry to Droid to iPhone.

Having full access to your business email, contacts and calendars on the go is the biggest productivity benefit of a smartphone. Yet, it can be expensive and confusing to set up this type of synchronization, and the most beneficial feature goes unused.  There are alternatives that do not require expensive servers, manuals or IT staff.

  • One option – accept less functionality on your smartphone: Have your mobile carrier set up BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). While it is a very economical alternative, it can leave the majority of productivity benefits – like real-time email synchronization and access to calendars – unaddressed.
  • A better option – use hosted Exchange for a full-featured smartphone: A Microsoft Exchange hosting provider like Intermedia can deliver enterprise mobile capabilities as part of its service. You get all the productivity benefits of Outlook – calendar sharing, company address lists and OCS – while in the office and on the go.

Microsoft research indicates the number one reason small- and mid-size businesses adopt hosted Exchange is for mobile access to their email. BlackBerry users can learn more about the difference between BIS versus BES in our whitepaper, which also details how hosted Exchange providers can deliver the capabilities you need.

If you are an iPhone, Droid or other smartphone user, learn more about how ActiveSync can provide enterprise mobility features to your device.

Hosted Exchange Benefits for End User

Intermedia commissioned a new white paper from industry research firm Osterman Research in order to provide additional tools to the marketplace regarding hosted Exchange. The below is part of a series of excerpts from the white paper, “The Case for Hosted Exchange” – available on Intermedia’s web site.

BENEFITS FOR END USERS

While IT can benefit significantly from a hosted Exchange deployment, so can end users. Among the many user benefits associated with the use of hosted Exchange are those discussed below.

A VARIETY OF ACCESS OPTIONS

A hosted Exchange account can be accessed via Microsoft Outlook on Windows, Microsoft Entourage on the Mac, and from any leading Web browser, including Apple Safari. This permits users to access their email, calendar, tasks, address lists, Exchange public folders and other content and data sources from virtually any desktop, laptop, network or other platform. In addition, an Exchange account can also be accessed from any POP or IMAP client, including Yahoo!’s Zimbra Desktop.

Full Hosted Exchange 2010 and 2007 Support for Motorola Droid

We announced today that our hosted Exchange services (including Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2007) are available on the newly launched Motorola Droid – Motorola’s newest smartphone.  Utilizing Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, we are able to configure the new Motorola Droid as well as Palm Treo, Motorola Q, T-Mobile Dash, Samsung Blackjack and the iPhone so users can take full advantage of the same Enterprise-grade Exchange services they are used to in the office – including email, calendars, tasks and instant messaging.

It is imperative for many knowledge workers and on-the-go employees to be able to work remotely with the same Enterprise-grade Exchange services they have in the office. With the varying devices on the market, users can have their pick and still have complete support through our hosted Exchange solution.

We also fully support BlackBerry® Wireless Solution hosting for hosted Exchange. We provide users with BlackBerry® Enterprise Solutions (BES) connectivity – for true wireless “push” email. Customers get two-way wireless synchronization of email, calendar, contacts and tasks.

Available on our hosted Exchange 2007 and new hosted Exchange 2010 offering, our HostPilot® Control Panel enables companies to retain Enterprise-grade security and control over their mobile devices. For instance, in the event a user loses his or her BlackBerry® smartphone, a company can remotely erase the device’s data with just a few clicks.

Is BlackBerry Suffering an Identity Crisis?

For the last few years, the BlackBerry has been king of the business smartphones. Even as the iPhone becomes increasingly business friendly, it seems that the majority of pure business users prefer the BlackBerry to any other device. At Intermedia, many more of our hosted Exchange customers synchronize their mail, calendars and contacts to a BlackBerry than they do to an iPhone.

I think BlackBerry’s success in the business market stemmed from the device’s simplicity. Traditionally, BlackBerry smartphones came with a rather limited feature set, but it did them all really well. Wireless push email, phone, calendars, contacts and tasks. That was about it. There weren’t too many games, no music, no videos…just plain old boring business communications. A focus on the core business needs, combined with an emphasis on security and remote provisioning, policy and management all through a connection with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server made the BlackBerry smartphone the ideal business accessory.

Can Good Technology Make the iPhone Enterprise Ready?

Will the iPhone community accept Good as a real enterprise option?

Since the first release of the iPhone in June 2007, an ongoing debate has raged over the smartphone’s enterprise worthiness. Some will argue that the phone was strictly a consumer device, lacking key features to make it enterprise-ready. Others lauded it as the ideal tool for the mobile worker, providing phone, real functional web browsing, and email fit for the higher executives due to its price tag…. So, who is right?
